Couple’s resilience shines through unexpected win

Meeting our insurance campaign winner Rhonda and her husband Richard, touched us deeply. Their journey made it feel like this random win was truly meant to be.

Rhonda and Richard Stutz, a couple celebrating 30 years of marriage this year, found their slice of paradise in Tasmania’s Huon Valley after relocating from Queensland in 2003. Drawn to the island's stunning scenery and welcoming community, they've never looked back.

“The humidity of the Queensland sun really got to us,” Rhonda said. They visited Tasmania on a winter holiday and decided it was a much better fit for them, so they moved down in 2003 and have been in their home in the Huon Valley ever since. “The scenery, the people, we love it. No regrets,” they say.

However, their journey hasn't been without its challenges.

In 2020, Richard received a devastating diagnosis: a severe brain tumour with a grim prognosis of just three months. Defying all odds, four years later, he continues to persevere, cherishing each day as a gift. Rhonda has also faced her own health battles, enduring kidney failure, dialysis, and complications from a kidney transplant.

Through it all, their spirits have remained unbroken, and their outlook on life is inspiringly positive.

When we launched our recent insurance campaign, offering a lucky Tasmanian the chance to win groceries for a year, little did we know the impact it would have on Rhonda and Richard’s lives. Meeting them touched us deeply. Their journey made it feel like this random win was truly meant to be.

When they received a call telling them they’d won, they were sure it was a scam. The joy that followed their realisation of the truth was overwhelming. "It's a blessing, really a gift," Rhonda remarked, reflecting on how the prize would alleviate some of their financial burdens.

While a celebratory splurge on groceries and a well-deserved drink were on the horizon, the couple’s true character shone through as they shared their plans to extend the generosity to others, despite their own adversities.

"We know there’s so many people in more need than us," Rhonda shared, explaining their regular contributions to local food drives. With their newfound winnings, they intend to amplify these efforts, demonstrating the true spirit of community and compassion.

We couldn’t be more thrilled that such a deserving couple won the competition. Their story is a powerful reminder of the ability to overcome adversity and give back, even in the face of personal challenges. We’re honoured to have been a part of their journey. Congratulations Rhonda and Richard!
