Lock it or lose it
With car thefts rising a staggering 92% among our insurance members between 2022 and 2024, we're partnering with Crime Stoppers Tasmania to remind you about the importance of protecting your vehicle and belongings.
The rising threat of car theft in Tasmania
Car theft in Tasmania has been on the rise, with recent statistics showing a worrying trend across the state. In our own insurance member base, car theft has surged by an alarming 92% between financial years 2022 and 2024. This increase means that vehicle owners face a greater risk than ever, particularly those who leave their cars unlocked or unsecured.
Crime Stoppers Tasmania has identified this issue as a significant threat to local communities, and together, we're taking steps to help car owners protect their vehicles from theft.
Why locking your vehicle matters
Results from our 2024 Annual Brand Research survey sent to 600+ Tasmanians revealed that an alarming 20% of respondents regularly leave their car unlocked when parked at home. It may seem like common sense, but simply locking your car can prevent it from becoming a target. Unlocked vehicles are easy targets for thieves who are often looking for quick and easy opportunities. A locked car, on the other hand, acts as a deterrent. Thieves are more likely to bypass a vehicle that’s secure, knowing it will take more time and effort to access.
Our partnership with Crime Stoppers Tasmania
Our partnership aims to create a safer community by raising awareness about vehicle security. Together, we’re sharing practical advice and educational resources to help Tasmanians protect their cars.
As part of this initiative, we encourage car owners to:
Lock your doors every time you step away from your car, even if it's just for a moment.
Keep valuables out of sight to avoid drawing unwanted attention.
Park in well-lit, secure areas whenever possible.
Double-check locks before walking away, especially in busy or high-risk areas.
Avoid hiding keys on your car or on your tyres.
Report suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers Tasmania. You can remain anonymous, and every piece of information helps.

Crime Stoppers stolen motor vehicle program
Early in 2024, Crime Stoppers released a stolen motor vehicle program. This included featuring stolen vehicles on their website with the ability for the public to make a tip, and also featured these same vehicles on their Facebook page. As of October 2024, 61% of their featured vehicles have been recovered. This is with thanks to the community and the efforts of Tasmania Police.
Lock it or lose it
It’s easy to assume that car theft won’t happen to you, but the recent surge in thefts among our members is a clear reminder that it can happen to anyone. More than 50% of stolen vehicles among RACT insurance members and broader Tasmania have been from their garaged address. Even at home, please remain vigilant. By incorporating a “lock it or lose it” mindset into your routine, you’re not only protecting your vehicle but also contributing to a safer community.
Here are some additional ways to secure your car:
Install an anti-theft system if your car doesn’t already have one.
Use a steering wheel lock for an added layer of protection.
Avoid leaving your car running unattended, even if you’re just grabbing something quickly.
Check your insurance
While locking your car is the first line of defence, car insurance can offer peace of mind for the unexpected. Don’t leave your vehicle’s protection to chance, make sure you're covered.
In collaboration with Crime Stoppers Tasmania, we urge you to take car security seriously. Don’t become a target. Lock your car, secure your valuables, and stay vigilant. By working together, we can make a real impact in preventing car theft and keeping our communities safe.
