Welcoming a new pet

Here’s how to make your new pet’s transition into your family as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Bringing home a new pet is exciting, whether it’s a tiny kitten or a playful puppy. But for them, a new environment can feel overwhelming.

The key is to make them feel safe, comfortable, and loved—especially as you juggle returning to work. Here’s how to help them settle in.

Preparing your home

Before your new pet arrives, make sure you have the essentials

  • Food and water bowls

  • A cosy bed

  • Pet food (preferably what they’re used to)

  • A litter tray (for kittens) or puppy pads (for puppies)

  • An ID collar

Extras like scratching posts for kittens, chew toys for puppies, and baby gates to keep them in safe areas will also come in handy.

Tip: Puppies enjoy interactive toys and kittens love cardboard boxes - keep some from your recycling for extra fun!

Creating a safe space

Set up a quiet area with their bed, food, water, and (if needed) a litter tray. Let them explore at their own pace and avoid too much handling in the first 48 hours. If you have young children, supervise their interactions to ensure a gentle introduction.

Keeping them safe

Both kittens and puppies are naturally curious, so pet-proofing your home is essential:

  • Secure breakable objects

  • Remove small items that could be swallowed

  • Tuck away loose wires

  • Set up a vet appointment for vaccinations and general health checks

Introducing the outdoors

If you plan to let your pet explore outside, check with your vet first. Typically, kittens should stay indoors for at least a week after their first vaccinations, while puppies will need to complete their vaccination schedule before outdoor walks. Ensure they're microchipped and have proper identification before venturing out.

Managing time alone

Going back to work? Help your pet adjust by:

  • Providing interactive toys to keep them entertained

  • Leaving a radio or TV on for background noise

  • Using a pet camera to check in remotely

  • Asking a friend or pet sitter to visit if you’re away for long hours

Bringing home a new pet is rewarding, but it takes patience and planning. By creating a safe and welcoming environment, setting a routine, and meeting their needs, you’ll help your kitten or puppy settle in smoothly. With a little preparation, you can balance pet care with your daily routine, ensuring a happy home for everyone.
