Tasmanians urged to stay safe in extreme weather

Published | 2 September 2024

We stand ready to help as recent damaging winds and heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across the state.

Our CEO, Mark Mugnaioni, said RACT had taken over 600 calls this morning from Tasmanians who have experienced property damage during the extreme weather over the weekend.

“Our foremost concern is that Tasmanians stay safe, particularly with the continuing high winds and risk of flooding following prolonged heavy rain,” Mr Mugnaioni said.

“It is important to monitor weather updates, follow directions from emergency services, drive to the conditions and never attempt to drive through flooded areas.”

RACT is urging all insurance policyholders who are affected to call 13 27 22 or lodge a claim online

“The sooner members lodge their claims, the sooner we can go about assessing and trying to fix the damage caused by the storms.”

We already have a team of qualified tradespeople on the ground performing urgent works to undertake immediate measures to secure property.

“As soon as it is safe to do so, we will have more staff on the ground and more resources in the affected areas to help assess the damage to properties.”

With over 370 claims already lodged, Mr Mugnaioni said he expected this number to rise once the full extent of the extreme weather had become clear.

“It is still unclear exactly how many homes and properties have been damaged, and we urge anyone affected to call us as soon as possible.

“RACT would like to thank emergency services, community organisations and utilities for their efforts to keep communities safe and connected during this time.”

People who think their property may be unsafe due to storm damage are encouraged to contact the State Emergency Services on (03) 6230 2700.
