Tail-wagging travels

Courtesy of our dog loving staff, we've sniffed out a list of the most pawesome activities, cafes and accommodation across Tassie that welcome your furry friends.

Let's transform that long drive into a tail-wagging adventure. Whether you're looking for a scenic walk, a cosy cafe with treats for both you and your pup, or a comfy place to rest your paws for the night, we've got you covered. Pack up the car, leash up your dog and get ready for a dog-friendly escape that you'll both remember!

Adventure tails

Outdoor adventures are always better with your dog by your side. While National Parks in Tasmania don't allow dogs, there are plenty of other places that can be explored.

Take a trek up Kunanyi

Kunanyi/Mount Wellington offers beautiful trails where dogs are welcome. They must be on lead in the Recreation Zone of Wellington Park, as well as on the Radfords Track and the Pipeline Track between Fern Tree and Neika. Make sure to check the trail map for dog-friendly areas. After your trek, be sure to stop by the Lost Freight café for a well-deserved break.

Beach and brew all in one

The Tessellated Pavement on the Tasman Peninsula is a must-see and your dog can join you too! Dogs on leads are welcome along the Eaglehawk Neck beach. Don’t miss a visit to Cubed Espresso for a coffee with a view. Other dog-friendly beach walks include Howrah, Bellerive, Dolphin Sands, Sommers Bay, Carlton and Bay of Fires to name a few of our staff favourites.

Paws in paradise

For those moments when your furry friend needs to stretch their legs and enjoy some off leash fun, head to the Queens Domain in Hobart or the Heritage Forest in Launceston. For some extra fun, head to the Dru Point Margate dog park, which features an agility course.

Take advantage of puppy parking

While dogs aren’t allowed in the Salamanca Market or Harvest Market you can use the “puppy parking” service for a small donation. Spots are limited, so arrive early to secure a place for your pup.

Pup-approved cafes

Exploring with your dog can work up an appetite, but luckily Tasmania has plenty of dog-friendly cafes and restaurants.

Central Hobart

For a delightful dog-friendly dining experience, head to Sisterhood in Sandy Bay. This cosy cafe welcomes dogs with open arms, with a special menu featuring house-made biscuits and puppycinos. If you're heading out for the night, the Hanging Garden is also pet-friendly.

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at Giddy Up Foodstore, where you and your dog can relax in a spacious courtyard. Not far up the Elizabeth strip, Room for a Pony is a popular brunch spot with ample outdoor space. They say it's big enough for a pony so that includes dogs too, right?

On the sunny side

Positioned on the eastern shore, Angie Sue is a great place to take your dog. With a deck out front and a courtyard at the rear, there are plenty of places you can enjoy with your dog after a walk along Lauderdale Beach.

Kingborough area

Salty Dog in Kingston has a lot of space and a fenced courtyard, perfect for dining with your dog. A bit further out, Peppermint Bay Hotel in Woodbridge invites dogs to join you on the deck for a relaxing afternoon.

In the Derwent Valley

Spend a day in the Derwent Valley and stop by The Agrarian Kitchen’s kiosk, where dogs on leads are welcome to sit outside.

Dining and drinking

The Coal River Valley's Wobbly Boot Vineyard just near the historic town of Richmond, holds the title of Tasmania's most dog friendly winery, with its very own resident Maeve.

Launceston's wine bar, Havilah, has a handful of heated street-side tables that are available for walk-ins with dog in tow.

One highly recommended location is Tod's Corner. The scenery is breathtaking, it's peaceful, and there's even a lake right on your doorstep. You'll be greeted with a welcome basket that includes treats for you and your furry friend.

For something a little more bougie it's worth giving this Airbnb at Dolphin Sands a try. If you've got a dog that loves the beach, this place has direct access. It's cosy, peaceful and you can enjoy an outdoor soak while taking in the stunning views, all in the company of your loyal companion.

Hotels

Indulge in luxury up north at Launceston's Stillwater Seven. This exquisite hotel offers a ground-floor suite complete with a private courtyard and a dedicated sleeping area just for your pooch, ensuring a comfortable stay for both you and your furry companion.

Discovery parks

For caravan enthusiasts, there are many dog-friendly spots. One of our favourites is River's Edge Camping Ground, which offers plenty of off leash areas and amenities for you and your dog to enjoy.
