Cool cats and chill canines
Summer is a paws-itively wonderful time of year, but it’s not all sunshine and belly rubs for our furry friends. Let's help prevent some of the cat-astrophic risks you could face this season.
Whether you’re a dedicated dog person or a feline fanatic, these tips will help you keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching with joy all summer long.
Stay cool and hydrated
One of the biggest threats to pets in summer is overheating. Dogs and cats can’t sweat like humans do, making them more prone to heatstroke. How you can help keep them cool:
Provide constant access to fresh water. Keep multiple water bowls around the house and in outdoor areas.
Create cool resting spots. Shade, fans, or air-conditioned rooms are ideal for beating the heat.
Avoid the midday sun on hotter days. Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
Never leave pets in a parked car. Even a few minutes in a hot car can be deadly.
Invest in a cooling mat. These mats provide a comfortable and safe way for pets to regulate their body temperature during hot days.
Help protect their paws
Hot pavement can cause burns on your pet’s sensitive paw pads. If it's a hot and sunny day, before heading out for a walk, test the ground with your hand. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
Safe outdoor fun
We all want to enjoy some summer fun, so whether you and your canine companion are heading to the beach or you're firing up the BBQ, make sure you keep a close eye on them. Stick to the shallows to avoid strong currents and riptides. And before you walk away from your hot BBQ, close the hood. The smell of a barbequed buffet will likely invite them to get too close to the hot grill.
Help protect your dogs from sunburn
Just like us, dogs are susceptible to sunburn, especially if they have short hair or are pale skinned. Head to your closest vet or pet store for pet-safe suncream before spending long periods in the sun.
Keep parasites and wildlife at bay
Summer is prime time for fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and encounters with wildlife. These pests and animals can carry diseases or pose other dangers to both dogs and cats. Ensure your pet is protected by:
Using vet-recommended flea and tick preventatives.
Checking for ticks after outdoor activities.
Ensuring vaccinations are up-to-date, especially for diseases like heartworm.
Being cautious in areas where snakes may be present, as bites can be life-threatening.

Why pet insurance matters
Despite our best efforts, accidents and illnesses can happen. From insect bites or unexpected injuries, summer can bring risks that lead to costly vet bills. Pet insurance is a safety net that can help provide the care your dog or cat deserves, with less worry about the potential financial impact.
By taking a few simple precautions, you can make summer safe and enjoyable for your furry family members. Keep them cool, protected, and loved, and they’ll reward you with wagging tails and purring companionship. And don’t forget to consider pet insurance as part of your overall plan to keep your pets healthy and happy, no matter the season.
