Epic club run recreates history and celebrates centenary

Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania (RACT) is celebrating its centenary this weekend by re-creating its first car club run, which was held 100 years ago.

Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania and RACT's Patron, expressed her excitement about the event.

“The RACT has been an important part of the Tasmanian community for 100 years and this event is a great way to celebrate that history and launch into the next chapter for the organisation,” Her Excellency said.

Group Chief Executive Mark Mugnaioni said the convoy of heritage and special-interest vehicles would embark on a picturesque journey from Hobart to New Norfolk.

“As part of our centenary celebrations, we’ve invited members and the public to join us on Sunday as we recreate our first club run from 1923,” Mr Mugnaioni said.

"Reminiscent of the past, the car run is a wonderful way to commemorate the rich history and tradition of RACT, a journey back in time that celebrates the legacy of our esteemed organisation.

“The event starts at Government House in Hobart and will showcase classic and modern vehicles, including RACT’s iconic Ford Escort panel van and the newest addition to the company’s fleet, the 100 Years community van.

"It is a nod to our roots as Tasmania's premier automobile club and a unique opportunity to participate in a journey that symbolises our enduring commitment to motoring enthusiasts."

Mr Mugnaioni said RACT’s journey began a century ago when a group of motoring enthusiasts united to form a club.

“In the early 1920s, mass motoring was still in its infancy, and the club's membership numbered in the hundreds.

“Today, we service about one-quarter of Tasmania's population, continually evolving to enhance the services we provide to our members.”
